Historical Trails of a Race with History
Portugal unveils a fascinating historical chapter through the imposing Lines of Torres, an ingenious military device that resulted in the first major defeat inflicted on Napoleon by the Portuguese-British army and the people in arms. In recognition of the importance of these lines, a National Day was designated, celebrated on October 20.
These facts are commemorated in our event through the animation of the start and finish area, led by the groups of the Cultural and Recreational Association 13 de Setembro de 1913. Together with the "Companhia de Artilharia do Sobral," the "Guerrilha de Montagraço," and the "A Treze a Rufar," they will set the tone for the informative panels on this theme, available at the supply stations. The Optical Telegraph of Serra do Socorro, which was crucial in communications 200 years ago, will carry a coded message provided by the Municipality of Mafra.
The Rota Histórica das Linhas de Torres, an association dedicated to the tourist development of this region and the Lines of Torres Vedras, was awarded the Best Public Redevelopment Project by Turismo de Portugal in 2012 and the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards in the Conservation category in 2014.
This association plays a crucial role in heritage recovery, historical research, publication editing, film production, and the creation of an intermunicipal network of pedestrian paths, such as the Grande Rota GR30 – a true nature experience along the Lines of Torres.
Recognizing the merits in promoting the region of the Lines of Torres, the "Linhas de Torres Running Challenge," a challenging 100 km trail, was honored by RHLT with the Wellington Honour Distinction in the Sports and Adventure category in 2022.
Long-distance competitions, due to their uniqueness, stand out as powerful means of promoting the surrounding environment, becoming points of great interest in sports tourism. The rarity of these events attracts participants with support teams, often requiring accommodation and food, simultaneously generating significant interest in local traditional commerce.
With a favorable climate in the winter months, Portugal offers an exceptional setting to enjoy nature. Join us on this exciting journey!
